India: Villagers kill man-eating tiger

Villagers killed a tigress in a natural park in northern India, two days after the death of another feline, shot in controversial circumstances in the country, local authorities reported on Monday.

The tigress was beaten to death Sunday by villagers in a protected reserve in Uttar Pradesh (north).

Residents suspected the 10-year-old animal had attacked a man, who subsequently succumbed to his injuries, according to local press reports.

“The tigress was killed after being assaulted by angry residents,” Mahavir Kaujangli, deputy director of the Dudhwa Reserve, told reporters.

“The body has to undergo an autopsy, we are waiting for the report,” he added.

Incidents between men and tigers become more frequent as human constructions encroach on the natural habitat of this endangered species and reduce its hunting territory.

About 40 tigers were killed in 2017 in the country, according to the Wildlife Protection Society of India.
