Ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) is a condition that occurs when the blood flow to the optic nerve is reduced or blocked, leading to damage and vision loss. The treatment of ION is typically focused on addressing the underlying cause of the reduced blood flow, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, as well as managing the symptoms of the condition.
There are currently no FDA-approved treatments specifically for ION, and the use of systemic corticosteroids, which are often used to reduce inflammation, remains controversial due to the potential for side effects.
However, there are a number of drugs and therapies that are being investigated for their potential to improve outcomes for patients with ION. These include:

- Stem cell therapy: Stem cell therapy is being investigated as a potential treatment for a wide range of conditions, including ION. Researchers are exploring the use of stem cells to repair damaged optic nerves and improve vision in patients with ION.
- Other therapies: Other therapies being investigated for the treatment of ION include laser therapy, which is used to improve blood flow to the optic nerve, and transcranial magnetic stimulation, which may help to improve nerve function.
The market for ION treatment is relatively small, given that the condition is relatively rare. However, as our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of ION improves, and as new therapies are developed, there may be significant growth opportunities for companies that are able to bring effective treatments to market.
